(Where Our) Power Lies

I am not coming from a place of judgement on any account here, but from a place of discovery. It is what, by the grace of God, I have learned and what I hope our daughter will know and understand. I am grateful to share it.

(Where Our) Power Lies

Our power lies in discerning
Who is allowed to come inside
In choosing who is not only
Just along for the ride

Our power lies in valuing
What we have to give
And rather than a Mardi Gras
We are empowered by the way we live

Our power lies in protecting
That which we’ve been given
Whether it’s our modesty
Or a life inside that is worth living

Our power lies in educating
Women about their worth
And how to navigate a world
That is largely blind to it from their birth

Our power lies within
Each of us for who we are
And with the power we’ve been gifted
We can be a vessel for life, not dark

Our power lies in knowing
We are the ones who bring forth life
And with this incredible power
We can make choices that bring peace, not strife

And whether from a seed
That we have or have not wanted
We know inside our hearts
Our child will not be forgotten

We must treat each other kindly
It is never black and white
But if we choose love, not fear
We can rightfully…

Take back our power
It was never theirs
Our wombs are ours
And with the exception of violence, we decide who can go there
